She thinks she's escaped. She thinks she's safe....

Helen has had to leave everything she's ever known behind her home, her family, even her own name.

Now, returning to the UK as Ellen Newman, she moves to a small coastal village, working as a nanny for Donovan, a criminal psychologist. Attractive, caring and protective, this single father and his sweet daughter are a world away from Ellen's brutal past.

But Ellen can't shake the feeling that something's wrong.

Strange incidents begin to plague her new family, and their house of calm is about to become one of suspicion and fear.

Who can be trusted? Who is the target? Who is closing in?

Closing In (Audible Audio Edition) Sue Fortin Elisabeth Hopper HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books

After reading 'The girl who lied,' I had to read anything by Sue Fortin. 'Closing In' didn't have quite the imagery and plot twists but it was good, suspenseful. The characters were rounded out & you never knew who was up to what. There is the PA you love to hate, the grandmotherly housekeeper, the rich trouble-making ex-wife, the stalker ex-boyfriend, the stalker criminal, the precocious daughter, the narcissistic forensic psychologist Daddy/boss.
The plot is mysterious, surrounding Ellen & her attempt to start a new life away from her abusive ex-boyfriend. When strange things begin to happen to and around her, people begin to wonder if she's crazy/dangerous, or in danger. The mystery is who is up to what. Is the PA jealous? Is one of the criminals her boss questioned seeking revenge? Is the ex-wife sabotaging the Nanny? Has the ex-boyfriend found her? Maybe the boss is playing mind-games. And the ante keeps going up.
Despite the cliche relationship triangles, the ending wasn't predictable. Pretty good read.

Closing In (Audible Audio Edition) Sue Fortin Elisabeth Hopper HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books Reviews

After a great beginning I found the ending rather contrived and disappointing.Quite frankly I think the author did not manage character development properly and did not allow herself choices to bring the story to a satisfactory conclusion.
Closing In is a Romantic Suspense, written in the typical romance style with descriptive intimate scenes-- the romantic story line being as important as the suspenseful story line. Having read The Girl Who Lied, I wasn't prepared for all the romance detail but realized this Fortin book did not advertise it as a gripping psychological thriller. Which is was not.
Although it's a somewhat predictable plot, the book is written well and the characters work. The child in the story seems more like four or five years old and I wonder if her age was changed at the last minute. Some of the characters weren't as fleshed out or developed as I would have liked, including Donovan, but the book was still extremely enjoyable.
I would give it a 4.5 because of a few typos, some inconsistencies in the plot and other small details but as long as Harper keeps the price low, I'll keep reading Sue Fortin books.
Here I was thinking this was a thriller. Instead it was a bad romance with seriously corny lines. A boss (who apparently is the perfect gentleman) puts the moves on his daughters baby sitters within days. And even though she comes out of a bad relationship with a manipulative man, thinks it is OK to be treated like a child and chastised throughout the book.

A good example of the level of dialogue which (if you are like me) could have you snorting with laughter - after a bit of kissing and cuddling, Helen/Ellens boss suggests they get off the lounge and make their way to the bed. The conversation goes like this
"It's king sized" he said.
"I know that" she grinned, "now shpow me what size your bed is."

Seriously.
Well written but definitely not a psychological thriller genre. More suited for young adults who want an uncomplicated romantic quick read.
I had a hard time keeping up with the book. I just didn't feel like the words flowed. I loved the storyline & it did get interesting towards the middle & the end, but I didn't enjoy the book as much as I would have hoped.
This book was okay, not great but not terrible. It was an easy read that kept me busy for a few hours. I was, though, extremely bothered, by the way the author described Izzy at times; its as if the author doesn't have any experience with children. Izzy is supposedly 8 years old- this is mentioned multiple times in the book. 8 year olds wouldn't be bouncing on a trampoline saying "I can bounce like Tigger! Bounce! Bounce!" 8 year olds also wouldn't be picked up and carried by their nanny, and I hardly doubt a class for 8 year olds would be called the 'Blueberry Class.' Also, at one point in the book, Donovan is in charge of the nighttime routine which includes Izzy's bath...really, the dad is going to bathe an 8 year old girl?? These little tidbits don't matter in the long run, but each time I read something about Izzy, it felt like the author was describing a 3/4 year old, and it eventually got very irritating.
This book is capturing and compelling, the psychological aspects all intertwined in multiple characters kept me entertained from the first to the last page! Helen aka Ellen as the main character is strong and endearing, you can't help but root for her through the entire story and her new boss and Love interest, Donovan. Both of them deserve to be from their previous significant others and the craziness of them. Sue Fortin knows exactly how to pull you into a story and the minds of crazy and sane characters, and I applaud her use of love, family dynamics, strength and weaknesses, mystery, swoon and thrills to keep a reader entertained and holding on to your seat to the very end.
P.S. She turns a struggle of a story into a HEA!
